Around The NBA

What They’re Wearing – China Edition

Last week, I wrote about what the Sixers were wearing back in the US. This week, the Sixers were in China for a week promoting the league and playing two games against the Mavericks in Shanghai and Shenzhen.  There weren’t a ton of notable sneaker moments this week between the two teams, but the trip to China was not devoid of content.

  • While not related to the games in China, there was something notable that happened with Philly’s new favorite son, Joel Embiid. An Adidas shoe leaked which was likely used during their pitch to keep Joel in the Three Stripes for the foreseeable future.

The model is the Adidas Pro Bounce which Embiid wore for most of last season in colors representing his home country of Cameroon.  The tongue features a simplistic caricature of Joel in gold on a black background.  The most beautiful part of the sneaker is the sole which uses the graphic of Embiid created for the project colored in Red, Gold, and Green symbolic of the flag of Cameroon to cover the entire sole.

Unfortunately for Adidas, it seems that Joel has moved on to Under Armour as he continues to wear the UA HOVR Havoc.  I’m personally not a huge fan of UA, but get that paper big fella.

  • Most of the 76ers’ players wore sneakers in team colors for the games. Two players of note who went a more creative route were Amir Johnson and Anthony Brown.  Both players wore Kyrie Irving’s signature Nikes from the recently released Cereal Pack.  Johnson wore the Lucky Charm Kyrie 4, while Brown opted for the Cinnamon Toast Crunch edition.  Brown will probably not be mentioned again on this site for the remainder of the season, so congrats.

  • Some of the Mavericks player also showed out for the games in front of the Chinese fans. Most notably was Luka Doncic who wore custom created Nike Hyperdunk X Low.  It features blue drip graphic on the upper.  Maybe it should have been molasses, since he moves so slowly on the court – boom, roasted.

  • Dennis Smith Jr and JJ Barea both went with highlighter versions of their sneakers for both games. Smith rocked the UA HOVR Havoc Low in bright yellow.  Barrea stepped on the court with Hyper Punch (pink for boys) Nike Kyrie 4 Low.

That’s all I have this week for the sneaker rundown.  I’m anxiously awaiting next week against Boston, Chicago, and Orlando.  Let’s get some W’s.

But wait there’s more.

While researching for this post, I came across what might be my favorite photo of the young NBA year.  It features former players (some legends, some not so much) who made the trip to China with the league for goodwill purposes.  There is so much to love about the accompanying picture.

It features Sam Perkins, Dikembe Mutumbo, Ray Allen, Caron Butler, Jim Jackson, Jermaine O’Neal, and the good doctor, Julius Erving being accompanied by some guy who looks like he just won a contest to shoot a half-court shot.  No wait… that’s Stephon Marbury looking like an idiot.   The disgusted look on Dr. J’s face is amazing.
