Sixers Throwback Jersey Revealed

Sixers Twitter was sent into a tizzy on Tuesday afternoon when the team posted the below video on their social media platforms:

The clip briefly shows a framed picture of Archie Clark from the 1970-71 season wearing a jersey with a rarely remembered Seventy Sixers script on it.

This morning around 8:00, the Sixers posted this picture on Twitter further insinuating that these will be the team’s new alternate jerseys.

Roughly 3 hours later, 76ers President Chris Heck, posted the following photo on his Twitter account from a photo shoot with Ben Simmons in what appears the be the jersey in question.

Around the same time, @Joelphia posted a pictures from the same photo shoot, which seems to confirm the jersey.

The team posted this video at noon today of the aforementioned photo shoot.  The team calling this a classic design is a bit of a stretch.  It lasted exactly one season, so they didn’t even think it was classic when it was originally created.

My Thoughts

I like them. I do wish they would have cleaned up the script a little bit, but I get that they were trying to be true to the original from 1970.

They fit with the current brand, which is a plus.  I like when there is congruity.

I am fearful that this will be the team’s identity in the playoffs.  As we’ve seen in past years, the teams choose (or are told) to wear alternate jerseys for playoff games.  Obviously if we make the Finals, I don’t care what jersey they’re wearing, but part of me wants these to be a one off for this season.  If we make a deep run wearing this particular jersey, it will go down in Sixers’ history.

I’ve seen some clamoring across Twitter for the black jerseys from the Iverson years, but be patient people. The 2020-21 season is the 20th anniversary of Iverson’s MVP and the Finals run, so it makes sense to hold off on them until next year.

And Another One…

Also making their rounds a few weeks ago is a photo from what looks like an office in Sixers’ HQ. It features a blue jersey with script Philadelphia and gold accents. These will hopefully replace the red Suxers jersey.

I’m sure we’ll be getting much more information about both jerseys in the coming days and weeks. It does strike me as odd that the team would release two new jerseys that are the same color as our primary ones. Not a whole lot of variety if the only options are blue or white.

More to come. Stay tuned.
