Philadelphia Athletes and Their Dogs

Joel Embiid dropped a bombshell on the Twitterverse Monday night when he posted a picture of his new pup. The dog was cute and all sure, but it was the name that had Sixers fans in tears.

Klaus HINKIE De Paula Embiid. It just rolls of the tongue, doesn’t it?

Embiid named his new puppy after the man who drafted him with the third overall pick, Sam Hinkie, if that’s not love than I don’t know what is. It really is touching to see a player think so highly of his former GM, it’s a shame the Sixers don’t feel the same way.

Klaus Embiid and his Furrari got me to thinking, there are plenty of other Philly athletes with pups that don’t get the recognition they deserve. So here are a few more Philly athletes with pups you’ve gotta get your eyes on:

Carson Wentz

I’m amazed Twitter still exists after this tweet. It’s the perfect tweet. There has never been a better post on www.twitter.com. Just close up shop everybody, Carson Wentz won.

This is Carson’s dog Henley, or Mama Henley as he likes to call her. When he was drafted by the Eagles in 2016, she was his only dog. The Wentz dog family has since tripled in size.

Carson’s second dog was another Golden Retriever named Jersey. I have no idea how he separates Henley from Jersey because they look like identical dogs. Jersey is great at playing catch and loves catching doubles at the same time.

The fun doesn’t stop there though because the Wentz family rang in the new year the right way, with a new puppy!

Naming your dog after one of the cops from Lethal Weapon is some type of power move. Riggs is a great dog name and an even better dog. Him and Jersey have become best friends and never leave each other’s side. I smell a buddy cop movie.

Rhys Hoskins

This is Rookie. He is a good boy. I would give Rookie, Rookie of the Year, every year until the sun exploded.

Rookie made his Spring Training debut a few weeks ago. Considering how thin the Phillies are in centerfield with Odubel Herrera and Roman Quinn sidelined, he could steal himself an everyday job. He can run and catch with the best of them and you don’t have to worry about his hustle, unlike some $300M superstars.

I would give Rookie a 13 year $330M contract six days of the week and twice on Sunday.

Ben Simmons

This is Flash, the French Bulldog. Ben Simmons got Flash while he was rehabbing a foot injury during his first season with the Sixers. Flash, however, was hardly Ben’s first new pet after joining the Sixers. In fact, Flash was Simmon’s fourth new pet after he joined the Sixers.

Ben Simmons really likes animals.

Simmon’s first pet was a Cane Corso named Bane. If you know anything about Cane Cross, it’s that they grow up to be very big dogs. Bane was no exception. Simmon’s pup quickly grew to 120 pounds and became too big for his surroundings. He realized he couldn’t handle this dog, so he gave it to one of the Sixers’ trainers. Ben and Bane still keep in touch.

Ben Simmon’s next pets were two Savanah Cats. Originally, Simmons just had one, but he felt bad for the lonely feline, so he felt he needed to get her a friend. So Ben got himself a second cat and almost immediately realized, he didn’t need a second cat. The cat was wild and would constantly scratch and bite Ben and his brother, Tribe, but mostly Tribe. It wasn’t long until they had to send the cats back to the breeder.

Ben quickly realized, he isn’t going to be around often enough to look after his pets. Eventually, Ben gave Flash to his parents, who had just moved to Philly. This gave Ben the freedom to work with the Sixers, while still letting him see his pup.

Claude Giroux

Look, I’ll be honest, I don’t know anything about Claude Giroux’s dog. I just wanted to include at least one Flyer because, ya know, four for four.

I don’t know the dog’s name. I don’t know when Giroux got the dog. Hell, I don’t even know the dog’s breed. But I do know one thing, Clude Giroux has himself a very good boy. And they kind of look like Fozzie Bear.

Look at him sitting in his little basket. So precious. If someone took a picture of this dog and Gritty, it would melt the internet.

I’ve never been the biggest Flyer’s fan, so that’s why I’m not up to date on the latest detes about their dogs. Giroux’s dog is opening my eyes to an entire world I’ve been ignoring. My Flyers fandom starts today and it’s all because of these old pictures of Cluade Giroux’s dog that are just now coming to my attention.
