Mr. 2020
Marial Shayok has been balling out for the Sixers G-League team the Delaware Blue Coats, being named player of the week. With the current performance of the team, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear his name chanted through the halls of the Wells Fargo Center. It’s only a matter of time before he gets his chance to run with the Sixers, but how long do we wait? … January, it’s January 2020 that’s when he’ll get his shot.
Through this article, I will break down my reasoning for this specific window and how effective Shayok will really be.
WHO
Marial has been astonishingly productive for the Blue Coats in his four games this season, averaging 29 points shooting 46% from the field and 31% from three, he also posted a season high 42 points in a win against the Greensboro Swarm on November 11th. If Marial can sustain this level of play through November and all of December, this will surely be rewarded with run, in January.
WHERE
The Sixers team has hit a slight slump after starting the season with an undefeated six games. If our boys don’t find their way out of this slump by January, Brett might want to shake up the rotations. He won’t throw the towel in on his guys until things get desperate, which most likely will be after a full month of disappointing games, shaking up the roster in January.
WHEN
Brett is now running with a short rotation every night giving his team a playoff feel, building the core rotations’ chemistry. The Sixers will eventually find their way out of this slump and after a month of running a limited rotation Brett will bring Shayok up from the G-League to extend his rotation, giving his starters a break in January.
WHY
This team needs productive shooters, and if Shake can’t stay healthy, or remain a productive player off the bench then Brett will look to fill his role, with the hot-handed Shayok. Good play in the G-League gets rewarded and I’m positive Brett would love another offensive threat to throw in his lineup, especially during load management nights.
