Liking J.J Redick off the Bench

With the new NBA season on the horizon, the Sixers have yet to finalize their rotations for the season.  Head Coach Brett Brown has toyed the role of former starting SG J.J Redick by having him come of the bench.

Throughout this pre-season we have seen Markelle Fultz in the starting line up.  Most people would think this is a demotion for Redick, but it’s not.  In fact, if Redick comes off the bench and plays with the second unit, it would bode well for him and the Sixers.

Redick would have more playing time than last season, making him earn his 12.24 million dollar contract.  That would involve Brett Brown taking a page from the the Popovich textbook, inserting Redick in the last 7 minutes of every quarter like they did with Manu Ginobili in San Antonio.

Having Redick come off the bench would help solve two of the Sixers biggest problems from last year: perimeter defending and scoring off the bench.  We all realize Redick is a deadeye shooter, but he is also a defensive liability.  This making his 6th man role more efficient for himself and the team.

If J.J continues to come off the bench, it would help the defense drastically by strengthening the defense of the starting five and allowing J.J to focus on preserving energy.  Additionally, he becomes the offensive spark off the bench when Embiid and Simmons are off the floor.

Now I don’t think that by making this change it’s going to automatically make this team a sure fire lock for the finals, but I do believe it is great adjustment from last season and could hopefully lead to a very successful season for “The Process”.
