Key Takeaway from Daryl Morey Introductory Press Conference: Have Some Patience

Daryl Morey’s first press conference in Philly showed just how excited he is to work for this organization.

Morey stated multiple times how he felt it is rare to be able to join a team with this roster and to have a coach like Doc Rivers. He even mentioned he wanted to try to get Rivers to coach for him in Houston before Rivers came to the Sixers.

“The fact that they went out to get Doc, a premiere coach in the NBA…there aren’t many opportunities where you get the chance to win,” Morey said.

With the big coaching and front office changes now complete, Sixers fans are now looking to see what the organization will do with the roster. From what it sounded like in the press conference, fans should have patience and be prepared to wait for at least a little bit. No big roster moves seem apparent to happen right away as the new group in charge needs to take some time to sort everything out.

“For me to come in on day one and act like I know exactly what the Sixers need to do with decision making would not be smart on my part,” Morey said.

To get caught up on the team and learn what everyone wants to do, Morey said he and Elton Brand have long meetings planned for the rest of the week. Morey even joked saying he hopes Brand does not mind being stuck in a room with him for hours at a time.

These meetings will also help make clear what role everyone will play in making decisions on the team. No matter what the roles are, all decisions made seem that they will be group efforts.

“I’m a collaborative guy,” Morey said. “The best ideas can come from anywhere. We’re going to use great people working together…’My way or the highway’ doesn’t yield championships in my opinion.”

Something that Morey, Brand and Rivers all agreed on was how talented Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons are and how they can still play together. Rivers discussed that the stigma for the duo needs to be changed.

“I have no doubt [Simmons and Embiid] can win together,” Rivers said. “There are a lot of other combinations of players in the league who haven’t won yet.”

Whatever ends up happening with the rest of the roster is yet to be known. Sixers fans can keep guessing and speculating on that for now, but they can know this for sure: After a rough 2019-2020 season, this team firmly believes they will be able to have the roster, coaching staff and front office to continue competing for championships.
