UPDATE: Doc Rivers to be Named 76ers Next Head Coach

UPDATE: The 76ers will hire Doc Rivers to a five-year deal as the team’s next head coach, per Adrian Wojnarowski. This comes after Rivers was fired by the LA Clippers on Monday. The 76ers met with Rivers yesterday to formally interview him. Rivers edges out the two other candidates Philly interviewed, Mike D’Antoni and Ty Lue.

The original article about the 76ers meeting with Doc Rivers is below.

After meeting with 76ers GM Elton Brand earlier today, Doc Rivers is reportedly watching the NBA Finals tonight with members of the 76ers organization, per Jason Dumas. A job offer to become the team’s next head coach could come soon.

Philadelphia has also met with Mike D’Antoni and Ty Lue for the open head coaching position. Reports have recently said the job appears to be between Rivers and D’Antoni, but tonight seems to make Rivers the more likely choice.

Rivers, who also goes by Glenn according to his birth certificate and Marc Zumoff, was fired by the LA Clippers after they blew a 3-1 lead to the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the playoffs.

At 58 years old, Rivers would bring experience and a strong resume to Philly. He has a 943-681 coaching record and won the 2008 NBA Finals with the Boston Celtics. He knows how to coach star players, having already coached Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen in Boston, and Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George in LA. Hopefully this would translate to Rivers getting more out of Embiid, Simmons and Harris than Brett Brown was able to.
