Breaking down the Sixers pre-draft workouts: Friday, June 14th

We are now less than a week away from the NBA draft and the anticipation is beginning to rise. Here’s who the Sixers brought by for Friday’s workout:

–Friday, June 14th–

Kyle Alexander F, Tennessee (6’11 220lb)

Hailing from Malton, Ontario, Alexander is a high flying big with excellent size. He has a 7’5 wing span and a ridiculous 9’2 standing reach. Has a nice frame but still needs to bulk up. A smooth athlete who moves very well on both sides of the court. Work in progress offensively. Can’t create for himself off the dribble. Great screen setter and rebounder. Great finisher on lobs and missed shots. No jump shot. Excellent defender. One of the best shot blocker and rim protectors in this draft class. His 185 blocked shots are second all time in Tennessee’s history. Has the athleticism to move out to the wing and defender more agile players. Alexander has a high floor as a defensive specialist and an intriguing ceiling with size, athleticism, and under developed offensive game. He could sneak his way into the first round.

Daulton Hommes G, Point Loma Nazarene (6’8 215lb)

The 2019 NABC Division II Player of the Year award, Hommes is a smooth shooting two guard. Great size to play the two, although he doesn’t always use it. Not the best athlete. Capable of creating his own shot and attacking the net, but his handle is limited. Struggles to finish around the net due to his slight build. Jump shot is his biggest strength. Can hit from anywhere on the floor. Moves well without the ball in his hands to create open looks for himself. Uses length well to shoot over the heads of defenders. A good rebounder, but could be better. Will struggle on defense at the next level due to his size and athleticism. Old for a prospect and suffered two ACL injuries in high school, so there are some major red flags. Hommes is more than likely to go undrafted, but his shot will warrant some G League interest.

Mahir Johnson G, Goldey-Beacom College (6’2 190lb)

A Chester, PA native, Johnson originally attended Delaware State before transferring to Goldey-Beacom for his junior and senior seasons. Previously won Delaware County player of the Year in high school. He has good size to play the point and shot the ball well as a senior. More than anything, Johnson is playing for an invite to the G League.

Nick Mayo F, Eastern Kentucky (6’9 250lb)

A four-time first team all-Ohio Valley Conference selection, Mayo is a skilled big man with stretch four potential. He’s capable of creating his own shot and moves well with the ball in his hands. Attacks the rim and close outs well. Eastern Kentucky’s all-time leading scorer, he’s capable of hitting from all three levels. Good body control off the dribble to score in traffic. Athletic enough to play above the rim. Can back down opponents off the dribble. Nice spin move. Moves well off ball as a shooter. Curls around screens to hit open looks. A good three point shooter, who nearly average two three pointers a game his senior year. He’s a good shot blocker and capable of protecting the rim. May struggle at the next level against more athletic bigs. Mayo is a perfect modern day big, but considering his competition level and lack of athleticism, he’s likely to go in the late second or undrafted.

Jordan Poole G, Michigan (6’5 195lb)

After an impressive sophomore season, Poole is ready to make the jump to the next level. He’s an athletic combo guard who’s lethal from deep. Can create for himself, but plays better off ball. Struggles to score in the post, but athletic enough to play above the rim. Excels at running the floor in transition and is a great outlet option. Jump shot is his main selling point. Can hit from anything, especially deep. Has good size, but looks small on tape. Needs to bulk up. A good not great passer. Lacks skills to play the one and size to play the two. Great motor and hustle. A willing defender who can make smart plays to create turnovers, but will struggle against bigger, more athletic wings at the next level. Poole made a risky decision to declare for the draft early. His shot seems ready for the next level, but I have doubts about the rest of his game. He’ll likely go somewhere in the second round.

Isaiah Roby F, Nebraska (6’8 226lb)

The 2019 Big Ten Sportsmanship award winner, Roby is a combo forward with some three and D potential.  Good size and length with insane 7’3 arms. Can’t create much for himself, but does a good job cutting and attacking the rim off ball. Solid in the pick and roll. A high flying athlete who lives above the rim. Works well off ball at finding open lanes to the net. Runs the floor well in transition and is a great lob threat. Capable three point shooter, but it isn’t anywhere close a strength. Has some serious upside if someone unlocks his jump shot. Defense could get Roby drafted. He’s one of the most dominant defenders in this class because of his size and athleticism. Can legitimately guard 1-5. His long arms make it almost impossible to shoot over him. A great shot blocker, averaged nearly two a game a senior. Roby has an awesome floor as a defensive specialist, but if someone can develop his jump shot, he could be an elite role player.
