Chicago Bulls hire Sixers’ Marc Eversley as new general manager

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, 76ers’ senior vice president of player personnel, Marc Eversley, has been hired as the newest general manager of the Chicago Bulls. With his hiring, Eversley becomes the first African American GM in franchise history for the Bulls.

Eversley and the Bulls came to an agreement on a deal late Sunday night. He will join new executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas as Chicago attempts to revamp their front office.

After spending ten years at Nike, Eversley first started in the NBA as a player development assistant for the Toronto Raptors in 2006; working under Bryan Colangelo. He would eventually join the Sixers as vice president of player personnel in May 2016 after Colaneglo was appointed president of basketball operations. Eversley was then promoted to senior vice president of player personnel in 2019 after Colangelo’s firing.

In his four years with the Sixers, some of Eversley’s most notable moves as VP include pushing for the team to trade up to draft Markelle Fultz and making a guarantee to Matisse Thybulle that the Sixers would draft him in the first round. While Thybulle has a been a productive rookie, neither move is notable for the right reasons.

Eversley represented one of the major holdovers from the Colaneglo era. With his departure, the Sixers may finally be able to get away from the Colangelo brain trust Adam Silver forced on the team.

Even more change could be on the way for the Sixers’ front office as the New York Knicks have shown interest in Sixers’ general manager Elton Brand. Although, Eversley’s departure may change the way the Sixers’ view their front office. In order to avoid further losses, the Sixers may prevent teams from interviewing any of their execs. It will be interesting to see if anyone else tries to poach someone from the Sixers front office and how the team responds.
