Around The NBA

What They’re Wearing – Marching Towards the Playoffs

The race for playoff seeding has officially begun.  The Sixers are in a battle with Indiana and Boston to determine which two of the three will have home court advantage in the first round.

Joel is back.  Boban is back. And surprisingly, Zhaire is back (kinda).  The team will need to come together in the final month or so of the season to round into form heading into the playoffs.  One thing that has been in form all season (or at least since Jimmy Butler showed up) are the sneakers for this Sixers team.  Let’s hit the highlights from the past few weeks

Jimmy Butler

We’ll start where we’ve started a lot this season – with Jimmy Buckets.  Jimmy has been the colorway king throughout the NBA recently.  He’s been pulling out player exclusives that are true one of ones.  No one else in the league – who doesn’t have a signature shoe – has come close to his on-court sneaker diversity.

Save the game against Sacramento where he dug deep into his closet for a pair of the ‘Bel Air’ Air Jordan 28 SE, Butler has worn the Jordan Supreme Elevation.  Like last time around, here’s a quick rundown of the colorways he’s worn recently:

March 2 vs Golden State – ‘Marquette’

March 5 vs Orlando – multicolored ‘Bandana’

March 7 at Chicago – honoring his hometown of Tomball, TX

March 8 at Houston – no clear look, but it looks like a galaxy motif on the side

March 10 vs Indiana – ‘Bowser’ version above

March 17 at Milwaukee – ‘Marquette’ again for obvious reasons

Tobias Harris

Tobias continued his trend of marching out Kobe models of years gone by.  Let’s hit the highlights.

March 2 vs Golden State – Nike Zoom Kobe A.D. 2018

March 5 vs Orlando – Nike Zoom Kobe A.D. 2017 ‘Honesty’

March 7 at Chicago – Nike Zoom Kobe VII ‘Barcelona’ shown above

March 10 vs Indiana – Nike Zoom Kobe V ‘Big Stage’ for the first half and ‘Honesty’ A.D. in the second half

March 13 vs Sacramento – Nike Zoom Kobe VIII ‘Camo Red’

March 17 at Milwaukee – Nike Zoom Kobe VIII ‘Black History Month’

Ben Simmons

Ben rocked a mismatched pair of the Nike Hyperdunk X on Friday night against the Kings inscribed with “Pray for NZ.”  Classy move.

In other news, his girlfriend wore his jersey to the game against Indiana.  It was customized with a “Kenny” patch over the Swoosh since she has an endorsement contract with adidas.  What a world we live in.

Joel Embiid

Joel played his first games since the All-Star Game this past week.  He ditched the Under Armour Anatomix Spawn he’s been wearing in favor of his trusty neon ‘Trust the Process’ Under Armour HOVR Havoc.

Jonathon Simmons

The other Simmons stepped out in the Nike Zoom Kobe XI ‘Mamba Day’ against the Warriors earlier this month.

Franklin the Dog

And last, but not least, Sixers’ mascot Franklin donned a Bryce Harper jersey.  Let’s go Phils!

I would be remiss if I didn’t touch on a few things from some of our recent opponents.

Shockingly, let’s begin with Magic guard DJ Augustin.  This news flew way under the radar, but Augustin signed an endorsement contract with Fila late in 2018.  He is the only active player in the league (Grant Hill endorses, as well) that reps the brand.  Like Puma and New Balance before them, they wanted to re-enter the basketball market.  Unlike Puma and New Balance, they chose a journeyman point guard who hasn’t averaged more than 13 points per game since 2013.  Anyway, he’s wearing the Fila Spaghetti (Stackhouse) Low.

There were some looks in Houston on March 8.  The Rockets have two guys with their own signatures (Harden and CP) and the reigning sneaker champ (PJ Tucker).  Harden wore the adidas Harden Vol. 3 ‘SCHWAAAG’.  Paul rocked the argyle heavy Jordan CP3.XII ‘Cliff Paul’.  PJ Tucker pulled out the Nike Zoom KD III ‘H-O-R-S-E’.  Also, Cam Newton and his hat were court side.  No further comments.

Kings rookie forward, Marvin Bagley III, wore the new Puma model – the Puma Uproar – in Philadelphia on the 13th.  I prefer the Clyde Court Disrupt to these, but Puma is definitely bringing it with their re-emergence into the basketball market.

As you’ve likely seen, we here at The Phifth Quarter have a newly formed partnership with Philadelphia sneaker shop Lapstone & Hammer.  As the resident sneaker guy, I’m pumped with the opportunity to collaborate with the L&H family.  Big things happening over here.

As always… Stay tuned.
