Around The NBA

What They’re Wearing – A November to Remember

Well here we are.

The team looks drastically different now than the last time I updated the world with a Sixers sneaker report.  Jimmy Butler is now in the City of Brotherly Love.  Covington, Šarić, and Bayless are now purifying themselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

Truth be told, I was planning on doing this in the middle of the week, before Butler played his first game, but both of my kids decided to bring some sort of virus home from daycare.  Needless to say, it was not the most enjoyable week of parenthood.  But alas, here we are.  Better late than never, I guess.

Let’s take a look at the on-feet highlights from the last week and a half of 76ers basketball.

Sixers Notes

Robert Covington

I have a quick story on this one.  My wife was sitting on the sofa next to me scrolling through Instagram while I was watching the game against the Hornets the other night.  I made a comment about Covington’s sneakers being different than he’s worn yet this season, and it looked like something is airbrushed on the side.  She looked up just long enough to roll her eyes and went back to looking at pictures of her friends’ kids and dogs.  Since my kids were sick and annoying, we decided to open a bottle of wine after they were asleep.  I was scouring the internet to try to figure out what the hell he was wearing with no luck.  So after the game, with red wine flowing through my veins, I slid into Robert Covington’s DMs for answers.  Obviously he didn’t answer me, because why would he?

I got my answer though through further digging.  He was wearing a customer pair of Nike Hyperdunk 2017 Low customized by Kickstradomis with images of Raiden from Mortal Kombat that were made for season’s playoffs.  This ended up being RoCo’s last game in a Philadelphia uniform, so at least he went out with something interesting on his feet.

Jimmy Butler

The newest 76er is a member of Team Jordan.  He primarily wears the Air Jordan 32 Low in assorted exclusive colorways.  It’ll be nice to see what he comes out with over the next few months.

Markelle Fultz

Against Indiana last week, Fultz wore a colorway of his trusty Nike LeBron Soldier XII with a very Reebok Question-ishfeel.  No comment regarding his free throw techniques of late.

Ben Simmons

Simmons brought out his Nike Hyperdunk 2017 from last year’s rising star challenge for games against Indiana, Charlotte, Memphis, and Miami.  On TV they look like a generic Halloween model, but the color is what Nike calls bright crimson, not orange.

Wilson Chandler

Chandler looked pretty good this week in limited minutes.  He’s been wearing the newest Nike KD model throughout his tenure with the 76ers.  He wore a Nike ID model of the Nike KD 11 in Sixers’ colors with his number 22 on the heel.

Opponents Notes

We’ve already seen both the Indiana Pacers and Charlotte Hornets this season, and they didn’t bring out anything worth commenting on.

Memphis Grizzlies

Chandler Parsons wore an ice blue version of the Adidas model called The KOBE when it was originally released in 2000.  It has since been re-released as the Adidas Crazy 1.  They look like space boots.  I cannot imagine running up and down the court wearing these.

Mike Conley gave Sixers fans their first look at the newest signature Air Jordan model.  He wore the Air Jordan 33 in Grizzlies colors.  Say what you will about the look of these, but at least Jordan is trying out some new innovations when it comes to basketball sneakers.  Consider me a fan.

Miami Heat

The Heat wore their beautiful Miami Vice inspired jerseys against the 76ers on November 12.  Both Bam Adebayo and Hassan Whiteside wore custom sneakers for the occasion.

Adebayo had a pair of Air Jordan XI customized with hits of pink and light blue and images representative of the city of Miami.  Woof.

If you think those are bad, Whiteside’s Nike LeBron 12s might be worse.

Orlando Magic

The Nike Kyrie 5 made their debut against the Sixers on the feet of Magic forward Jonathan Isaac.  He wore the Nike Kyrie 5 “Taco” which was designed in collaboration with Taco of Odd Future.  I’m no Kyrie fan, but these are cool.

Utah Jazz

The jazz are pretty boring when it comes to their sneakers.  I could see Donovan Mitchell having his own shoe in a few years, but for now he wears generic, mid-tier Adidas.  The only play who wore anything interesting was Jae Crowder.  He showed out in the Air Jordan XVIII which are known at the last new Air Jordan model that MJ ever wore on court in an NBA game.

I know that was longer than normal, but blame my kids.  I’ll be back sooner than later with more updates on the sneaker happenings of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Stay tuned.
