76ers sign free agent Ryan Broekhoff

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 76ers have signed free agent forward, Ryan Broekhoff. With this move, the Sixers have officially filled out their 17-man roster for Orlando.

A former All-American from Valparaiso State, Broekhoff spent the first five years of his professional career playing overseas in Europe before spending the last two seasons in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks. Broekhoff was also a member of the Australian national team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Had it not been suspended, he would have also joined the Australian national team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Mavs waived Broekhoff on February 11th.

In his two season in the NBA, Broekhoff has carved a role for himself as a three point specialist. A 40% career shooter in 59 appearances, Broekhoff shot 39.2% on 3 three point attempts per game this season. That might not sound like much, but he only played ten minutes per game. Per 36 minutes, Broekhoff would’ve averaged four made three pointers on ten attempts per game. Per 100 possessions, he would’ve averaged 5.4 made three’s on 13.7(!!) attempts per game.

Of his 79 career field goals, 58 are three pointers. So 73% of his career field goals have come from three.

Broekhoff has one career start to his name, which came earlier this season against the Rockets. In 20 minutes, he shot 3-7 from three for nine points, five rebounds, and a -4 plus/minus.

This signing is most likely the Sixers trying to fill an open two-way spot. It’s hard to expect Broekhoff to come in and fight for a spot in the Sixers starting rotation, but he provides a skill that the Sixers could always use more of. He should fit in nicely at the end of the bench.
